We saw it last night. It is FABULOUS! It is a simple story, beautifully told and fantastically animated, it has a good message too. Wall-E is just the cutest, funniest thing, they manage to make him amazingly expressive without words. It really is one of the best films I have seen in a very long time.

We got some nappies this week. They are so small and cute, but also very very very complicated. I know, it’s a nappy, how complicated can it be, right?

Well, we have decided to try out some reusable washable nappies because we want to try and be as environmentally friendly as we can (and as an extra bonus apparently they will also be the cheaper option in the end). It costs quite a lot to begin with, but I have read that at the end of the day it saves money as disposables are expensive. However reusables are not the simplest option. We’ve gone for the Bambino Mio ones. We got a set which basically covers from birth to toddler and includes:

  • Nappy covers (these look how I imagine nappies to look, with elasticated sides to stop stuff leaking, a velcro bit to do them up and pretty patterns)
  • The nappies themselves (they are like big cotton things that you have to fold up and put inside the covers)
  • Laundry bags
  • Some antibacterial stuff to put in the washing machine
We also now need to get the following:
  • Liners (disposable biodegradable things that go inside the nappies and you can flush away)
  • A nappy bin (to keep the dirty nappies in until they’re washed)
  • Nappy sacks
See what I mean? This is complicated stuff for a newbie like me. It took me a long time to figure out what all this stuff was. I mean, a liner? Umm, wha? A nappy cover? What the bejesus is that? I feel like I have so much to learn. And about everything, not just nappies. So many new words have entered my vocabulary – some of them quite scary I assure you. It’s very educational being preggers. As far as these nappies go, I’m going to have to practice! I am wondering how long my dedication to the environment will last, as it seems a lot more involved :-)

We’re still going to use disposable nappies some of the time, mainly when we go out, simply for the convenience of it, but hopefully this will cut down on our contribution to the landfills. And plus they come in cute star and spot patterns.

Aww, how can something made to catch poo be so cute?

In other news, the little bean is still practicing his dance moves in there. Sometimes my bump changes shape now when he moves around and it’ll go all lop-sided. I am, at the same time, enthralled and weirded out by it. It’s so amazing. I could sit there and watch it for ages.

Also, Ross came to my routine antenatal appointment with the midwife last week. Apart from getting to see me test my wee for protein and have my blood pressure taken again, he got to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time – it sounds pretty much like a galloping horse. Really cool and very reassuring :-) .

Until ‘Lost’ is back (I misssss you my sweet Lost) Heroes‘The Office: An American Workplace’ and ‘Mock the Week’ are keeping me going. Mock the Week was on TV last night. Woo-hoo! I think Ross posted this clip from last week’s show on his tumblr blog the other day, but it is really, really funny, so I’m posting it here too. It’s Russell Howard summing up the papers perfectly :-) It’s funny because its true.

All of the regular comedians from the show are brilliant. We went to see Frankie Boyle at the Hackney Empire last month where they were filming for his new dvd. He was totally hilarious (I was so so so glad we weren’t sitting in the first few rows though because he does like a bit of ‘audience participation’ and I would have been so embarrassed). He does tend to repeat the jokes from the TV show on his live show, or maybe its the other way ’round, but either way he’s still incredibly funny.

Also, we went to see Hancock this week. I really loved it. I pretty much love all Will Smith films. I think he is hilarious and I do like a film with a happy ending. We want to see Wall-E and The Dark Knight next. Why are films like buses, for months nothing good comes out, then they all come along at once.

My pre-pregnancy clothes REALLY don't fit anymore...

I think my tee-shirt shrunk. Or something like that. I haven’t actually attempted to wear any of my normal clothes for a while. They make me look HUGE! It’s a good look! :-) It’s 28 weeks today and I really am starting to look properly preggers.

Hmm, maybe a bit of both

Cake or baby? Hmm, maybe a bit of both

And just for entertainment…when I look down now…

According to babycentre.co.uk (my new favourite website), the baby is around 38cm now from head to toe (but of course its all curled up in my tummy) – that’s really quite scarily big. It’s actual baby sized. One thing I have been wondering for a while now, with this baby in there, where the hell have all my organs gone? Oh yeah that’s right, they’re squashed, particularly my bladder. Poor bladder. I never used to have to get up in the night to go to the loo. Now, its every single night, at least once!! Oh well, I guess its good practice for what’s to come. In other baby news, he can also now open his eyes and close his eyes and has fingernails.

Oh, being pregnant changes a person. Two things have happened this week that make me say this.

The first is this: I have entered the strange and confusing world of prams!

Mr B and I were sitting in a cafe eating lunch yesterday when it occurred to us both  that we had reached a whole new level of sad. We are trying to choose a pram at the moment and whilst you may think that this is an easy thing to do, it is harder than it may at first seem. I mean, a pram is a pram is a pram, right? Much of a muchness, surely? Ah yes, that’s what I thought until recently too. But how wrong I was. Whilst sitting eating our lunch we both started craning our necks to look at prams being pushed down the street. “Ooooh that’s nice” I say. Ross would nod in agreement and comment on the ease of steering. Oh yes, we both now have opinions on prams. It was at this point that we realised that whilst in mothercare the previous day we had actually been stalking people ’round the shop, peering over shelves, trying to figure out what make of pram they had! Before I was pregnant I honestly had no opinion on prams, but now, oh now Ross and I could talk for literally hours on the potential benefits of a lightweight frame and a large shopping basket and different size and number of wheels and the ability to make it lie flat. It’s honestly more interesting than you’d think. What a strange old world it is. After our trip to mothercare we both really like the Bugaboo Gecko (in red – very importantly), but to be honest it is a little pricey. We also liked the Silver Cross 3D, which is more of your bog standard pram, more reasonably priced than the bugaboo, but I have read some very bad reviews. We’ll see. I think we’ll be making our purchase in the next few weeks.

The second strange thing that has happened this week is that I have started spending time playing with my belly.

The little bean has started kicking even more strongly now and Ross and I have started staring with absolute fascination as my belly moves and wobbles and jolts about. It’s so strange but also really, really cool. I am playing a little game at the moment where I prod my belly and he kicks back (it might be coincidence but I like to think not). Ross says, and I have to admit its true, that it looks just a little bit like that scene from alien. But without the alien. It does make me very excited to meet the little fella though. A bit petrified, but very excited indeed.
